The 18th Amendment was repealed by the 21st Amendment on December 6, 1993. People started to realize that not was the population of gangs increasing, but they controlled the city and had power over law enforcement. People also realized that violence and crime occurred more often than it had before Prohibition. The problems associated with the lack of respect people had for the Prohibition and the gang activity led to the U.S. Congress passing the 21st Amendment to repeal the 18th Amendment. Many people were happy that the 21st Amendment became a law that they even celebrated.
How it impact us today.
Although gangs were no longer needed to supply alcohol, they did not disappear. Gangs made such a huge profit selling illegal drugs, when alcohol became legal again, they simply turned to other illegal drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and more. Gangs have maintained a significant role in the U.S. It is a way of survival for many because of the society we live in with all these types of different gangs we're surrounded by. Many of people chooses this route to be a gang member because of their environment. Furthermore, gangs are a big part of American society in many ways.
"Liquor prohibition led to the rise of organized crime in America, and drug prohibition has led to the rise of the gang problems we have now." -Drew Carey
