Prohibition was the period of time after the 18th amendment was passed, which banned the sale of alcohol in the U.S. Millions of people did not want or respect this law, yet their only concern was maintaining a reliable source. The fact that alcohol was illegal did not stop most people from buying and consuming it. This period of time was a turning point in the history of organized crime in the U.S. because the population of gangs quickly increased to fulfill this demand for alcohol; they made large amount of money and became a very powerful force in the country.
